Gianni Infantino elected FIFA President

Gianni Infantino has today been elected as the President of FIFA for the remainder of the current term of office (until 2019) by the Extraordinary FIFA Congress held in Zurich. Infantino was elected in the second round of voting with 115 of the 207 votes from FIFA's national associations, defeating Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, who had 88.

The first round of voting failed to determine an outright winner, though Infantino led with 88, three more than Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa.

BFU was represented at the congress in Zurich by President Borislav Mihaylov and Vice Presidents Mihail Kasabov and Atanas Furnadziev.

"I cannot express my emotions at this moment," said Infantino after his election. "We will restore the image and respect of FIFA throughout the world. I want to be the President of all 209 national associations, and work with all of [them] together to build a new era within FIFA where we can put football in the centre stage again, and focus again on this beautiful game."

He becomes the ninth President in FIFA’s 112-year history.
